I connected my handheld device to the PC before I installed the BOOKMAN Desktop Manager and it can't find the Expansion Card.

You have to re-install the drivers for the USB port using the Windows Device Manager.

  1. Make sure your handheld device is connected properly to your PC and that your handheld device is on and ready to receive communication.
  2. Right click on the My Computer icon on your PC Desktop.
  3. Click Manage.
  4. Select Device Manager.
You see a list of available devices and ports.
  5. Double click the item indicating the BOOKMAN connection.
    The device properties window opens.
  6. Click Driver.
  7. Click Update Driver.
  8. Follow the instructions offered in the Update Driver Wizard.
If you are asked to specify a location for the driver, point to C:\Program Files\Franklin Electronic Publishers\BOOKMAN Desktop Manager\usbdriver.
  9. Open the BOOKMAN Desktop Manager.
I connected my handheld device to the PC and started the BOOKMAN Desktop Manager, but it can't find the Expansion Card. Check to see that you have an Expansion Card inserted in your handheld device, that your handheld device is properly connected to your PC and that your handheld device is on and ready to receive communication. To check whether the port you selected is functioning properly, locate its entry in the Device Manager on your PC. This is generally found under System in the Control Panel. To learn more about the Device Manager, please refer to your PC or Windows manual.
I am using a serial-to-serial cable and I can't find the Expansion Card. If you still have problems after you have verified the card and connection, check to see if you had another device previously connected to the COM port you are currently connected to. In that case, your PC may think the port is still busy. For example, if you previously connected a Palm device, you can free the port by right clicking the HotSync icon in the System Tray and deselecting Local serial. Make sure any device you previously connected to your COM port is disconnected and its respective software is not retaining the use of the port. To check whether the port you selected is functioning properly, locate its entry in the Device Manager on your PC. This is generally found under System in the Control Panel. To learn more about the Device Manager, please refer to your PC or Windows manual.
Send to BOOKMAN is not flashing and my handheld device is connected to my PC. The BOOKMAN Desktop Manager cannot identify a handheld device. Check to see that you have an Expansion Card inserted in your handheld device, that your handheld device is properly connected to your PC and that your handheld device is on and ready to receive communication.
Titles for the Mobipocket Reader is the only title listed in my eBooks View. Where are my eBooks?

Click Titles for the Mobipocket Reader. You see the dialog box of Mobipocket Reader titles. Click OK to send your Mobipocket Reader titles to your handheld device.

If the dialog box of Mobipocket Reader titles is empty as well, either you have not downloaded any eBooks or you have deleted from your PC any eBooks you had downloaded.

Click Internet then click the link to visit Franklin's eStore or your Download Library to purchase or download eBooks.

Any eBook you purchase and download from www.franklin.com can be downloaded again at any time, even if you have deleted it from your PC.

To send another title formatted for BOOKMAN you will have to replace the existing title with the one you are sending. If you wish to retain your current title on your Expansion Card, you can purchase additional cards at www.franklin.com.

  1. Find the location where you saved the title on your PC.
  2. Double-click the title.

... Please check your connections and try again. The connection between BOOKMAN Desktop Manager and your handheld device was lost or interrupted or your handheld device does not have enough power to perform the task. Make sure your handheld device is connected correctly, that your handheld device is on and ready to receive communication, and that your handheld device has sufficient power.
No Backup available to Restore. You cannot restore the Databank data in your handheld device because it was never backed up. Backup your Databank data periodically so that you always have fairly recent data to restore to your handheld device.
The selected title is too big for the BOOKMAN Expansion Card currently in your handheld device. The title you are attempting to send is too large for the available memory in your Expansion Card. Insert an Expansion Card with larger available memory. There are two types of Expansion Cards: the BMC-2 containing 2 MB of memory, and the BMC-4 containing 4 MB of memory. Additional cards can be purchased at www.franklin.com.
No BOOKMAN Expansion Card found. Please check that your handheld device is connected to your computer and the BOOKMAN Expansion Card is in your handheld device. The BOOKMAN Desktop Manager could not locate an Expansion Card. Make sure you have inserted your Expansion Card, and that your handheld device is connected correctly and on and ready to receive communication.
You have no COM ports available. Please refer to your computer documentation on how to make a COM port available. If you had another device previously connect to this COM port, your PC may think the port is still busy. For example, if you previously connected a Palm device, you can free the port by right clicking the HotSync icon in the System Tray and deselecting Local serial. Make sure any device you have previously connected to your COM port is disconnected and its respective software is not maintaining the use of the port.
You do not have a valid license for this title. See Help for further information. The BOOKMAN Desktop Manager cannot locate a valid license to read this title. It may have been accidentally deleted from ...\My BOOKMAN Files\Licenses. If you do not have a license for the title in that folder, please visit your Download Library at www.franklin.com to download the title again. Never delete any title license from ...\My BOOKMAN Files\Licenses. Doing so will prevent you from sending that title to an Expansion Card.
You do not have another license available for this title. It cannot be sent to your BOOKMAN Expansion Card. When you purchased your title, you purchased a finite number of copies. You can only send this title to that same number of Expansion Cards. This does not affect how many times you can copy and re-copy a title to an Expansion Card, only how many Expansion Cards can contain a copy of this title at the same time.
Your BOOKMAN Expansion Card is busy. Please wait for the operation to complete. You are in the middle of sending a title to your Expansion Card. When the BOOKMAN Desktop Manager is finished its operation, try your action again.
You do not have sufficient power. Please connect the AC adapter or replace the batteries in your handheld device. See your handheld device's User's Guide for information on how to replace the batteries. If you have a proper AC adapter, connect it to your handheld device. If your handheld device uses Lithium CR-2032 batteries you must use the AC adapter to provide enough power to transfer titles. For handheld devices that use AAA batteries, users may want to use an AC adapter to conserve battery power. Only AC adapters purchased from www.franklin.com will work with these devices. Please look for Model # 7402001 when you visit Franklin's Web site.
The title you selected was not found. Please click the Refresh button and try again.
  1. Click Refresh.
  2. Click the title you want to send to your Expansion Card.
Any time you add or delete titles from the ...\My BOOKMAN Files\ directory, click Refresh to display the current contents of that directory in the eBooks view of the BOOKMAN Desktop Manager. Note: Any eBook you purchase and download from www.franklin.com can be downloaded again at any time, even if you have deleted it from your PC.
